Coronary Artery Disease Treatment

For the treatment of coronary artery disease, there are both medical and surgical options.

Drugs to alleviate the disease include nitroglycerins, beta-blockers, and calcium channel blockers.

Nitroglycerins widen or dilate arteries and improve blood flow while beta-blockers reduce the amount of oxygen the heart needs. Calcium channel blockers also dilate the arteries and reduce blood pressure by relaxing the smooth muscle near the arteries.

In coronary artery bypass surgery, a leg of the chest blood vessel is grafted onto the blocked artery. The blood vessel bypasses the blocked area, allowing blood to flow around the obstruction to the heart to relieve angina. This procedure can be used to help blood flow on several blocked arteries if necessary.
